Chapter 1: Meeting with Takaba Akihito - Morigawa Hiroshi

My name is Morigawa Hiroshi and I'm working as senior proofreader for Hakubunkan publishing company. This day I was planning to have three meetings with a beginner writers for more close and informal discussing of their novels. My work sometime include more then just correcting but sometimes I've influence on a plot. I give some changes which would be more good for selling. Or help to break through writing crisis with fresh ideas. Work is more complicated then it seems at first sight.

I was pretty packed and busy with projects for quite long time. Didn't have time to relax and enjoy life. My wife complained for my work schedule, that she wanted to receive more attention. I decided to reduce quantity of projects, so I won't lose my family.

Now I stood near the coffeeshop where I've planned to have my second meeting in this day, but just before I came into the room impregnated with a strong smell of coffee drinks, I got message from writer that he had family issues so wouldn't be able to meet with me. Usually I would rush back to office to look at new project, but in this sunny day I just strongly felt that life is going somewhere with somebody, but not with me. That I have to change something in me, in my life to become involved in it too.

I didn't want to drink coffee or go back to office so I was thinking where should I spend three hours before next meeting. Next moment my eyes caught an advertizing of photo exhibition "Tokyo in which we live" placed on a wall of modern gallery on the opposite side of the road. It passed a lot of time when I've visited similar places therefore it seemed to me as good interesting opportunity to spend time.

The exhibition was made of a large number of the photos. On the stand near an entrance was reported that there were more than hundred photos made by different photographers.

I started going on a hall. Each photo was unique on beauty, presenting Tokyo sometimes from unexpected sides. There were panoramas, people, shops, children and many others. Photos contained huge part of an everyday life of Tokyo. And even I could tell that it was Life from capital letter of L.

I didn't manage to go by more then three photos as young man came to a side from me. Man didn't look like more then 21 years old or more like a boy for me, he had a fair hair and nut eyes. Despite to me he started to tell what each photographer could see during shooting and what he wanted to show. After the first hall of an exhibition I decided to be presented to my young guide.

The young man loudly and warmly burst out laughing, when I asked him about his guiding job. Boy presented himself as Takaba Akihito. He was a photographer and at this exhibition there was one of his works. At mentioning of his photo boy blushed. Young man appeared as the curator at this exhibition, also he selected most of photos that today exposed. Takaba-san very much loves his profession, and was proud that he was asked to help with the organization of this exhibition.

I
ooked with a small smile at the internal light containing in eyes of the boy in shabby baggy jeans and a t-shirt with an absurd inscription. Everything fades into the background before the internal force and enthusiasm of this person. At this moment I felt a warm wave of Life radiating from him.

We passed on other halls. More than one and a half hours flew by as an instant. I learned about the city in which I live so much new. Takaba-san told not only about receptions and shooting methods, but also about history of places imprinted in photos. We discussed what could inspirited each photographer to give special name to his photo. My guide was very interesting interlocutor.

Before the last hall I asked Takaba-san about his photo presented at this exhibition as it seemed to me that I didn't see it in other rooms. The young man blushed again and told that it just in the following one.

As soon as we came into the next room I at once paid attention of my guide to a photo on an opposite wall, it was the photo of a big format. A panorama of night Tokyo shot from a window with a panoramic view, at the edge of photo near a glass there was the black silhouette of a man's figure looking at the city. From a photo blew feeling of something powerful and imperious. I told at once Takaba-san that it is the magnificent photo. The young man blushed even more harder than before. I approached and read name of the photo - "Aura of the Power" photo was taken by the photographer Takaba Akihito.

Having examined the last hall me and Takaba-san stood in corridor near an exit from an exhibition. The photographer told me more interesting information on an exhibition, on photographers. He listed a little well-known one, and as he dreams to reach their skills.

Also young man told that wants to become famous in a field of a criminal photojournalism. His usual work is in the popular gossips newspaper as the photographer, and also earns additionally as the freelancer. I asked his contacts if I will need his help. Maybe it would be possible to publish article about an exhibition in one of magazines of our company. Takaba-san began to shine. We exchanged by business cards.

In this moment the large man in a black suit approached to my interlocutor and told him that his presence is required in other place. Man looked dangerous. It seems to me he was the yakuza or the bodyguard, but the young man wasn't frightened, rather on the contrary like knew him and it wasn't something unusual. Takaba-san apologized and told that he should go. I told him also that it is time for me to go on the following meeting too.

The young man turn around and went to an exit.

"Takaba-san", - the photographer turned back on my call. "I think you already reached skill, that can certainly not of which you dream, but that you are capable to see through eyes of other photographers already speaks about much. If you aren't satisfied with the photos, it seemed to me simply the target in your viewfinder is chosen wrong."

Takaba-san looked thoughtful for a moment, then he gentle smiled and knowingly nodded.

"I will take your words into consideration. I was glad to get acquainted."

The young man left through the door and behind him the man in black. It was time for me to be at other meeting too, therefore I left afterwards.

I saw Takaba-san's figure and that on his face appeared a wide happy smile, when he saw the man leaned on the car and smoking a cigarette. From this person I felt the same aura as on a Takaba-san photo. The step of Takaba-san has quickened the pace in the direction of this force.

The vital force and light surrounding the young man warmed my soul. His thirst of life, his light also affected me, even if I talked with him for such small period of time. On the road to my next destination I called to my wife and suggested her to have dinner together in cafe in the evening. And I felt as she smiled at her end of a phone.
